Central Florida Zoo & Botanical Gardens Announces the Arrival of
Second Rhinoceros to the FAIRWINDS Credit Union Indian Rhinoceros Exhibit
The Central Florida Zoo & Botanical Gardens has received a second rhinoceros, PJ, who came to the Zoo from the White Oaks Conservation Center in Yulee, Florida. PJ is a greater one-horned male rhinoceros and joined the Zoo’s other male rhinoceros, Jahi. PJ will be off exhibit until he becomes adjusted to his new home and becomes acquainted with Jahi. Jahi will be on and off exhibit during this period to also allow him time to adjust to PJ.
PJ and Jahi will both turn two years old this summer and the Zoo is planning a birthday party celebration on June 29 from 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. The Zoo will celebrate the “Birthday with the BIG Boys”, with music, games, children’s crafts, face painting, and Zoo animal encounters. The birthday party will become an annual Zoo event. Both rhinoceros can reach up to 5,000 pounds when fully grown and are the second largest land mammal in the world. The only land mammals larger than the greater one-horned rhinoceros are elephants.
“I am sure our guests will understand that there may be times when one or both rhinoceros may not be visible on exhibit,” said Bonnie Breitbeil, Director of Animal Collections. “Just like us, these two boys will need time to get to know each other and feel comfortable in their new surroundings. We hope that soon both Jahi and PJ will be romping around their new habitat delighting our guests with their antics!“
“The addition of PJ will round out this exhibit and make it more exciting and educational for our guests,” said Joe Montisano, CEO. “The FAIRWINDS Credit Union Indian Rhinoceros Exhibit demonstrates the Zoo’s commitment to bring new experiences to our guests and shows our dedication to the conservation and preservation of these magnificent animals.”
