How many species of scorpions are there?
There are about 2,000 known species. They are found on every continent except Antarctica.
How big do scorpions grow?
They range from about 1/2 inch
to 10 inches long. There are 70 species found in the
U.S. They are only 1 to 3 inches long.
What color are scorpions?
They come in a variety of colors-- brown, black, and even greenish. Their color helps them blend into their surroundings. Some even glow under a black light.
How many eyes does a scorpion have?
Some have 6 eyes but many species have 12 eyes. None of them have
good vision though. They are only able to tell the difference between
light and dark.
Are scorpions venomous?
Yes. They are carnivores and use venom to paralyze their prey. They hold the prey with their front claws while the tail comes up over its head to sting its prey.
Can a scorpion kill a human?
About 25-30 of them have a type of venom that can make someone ill or kill them. Mostly, the
symptoms mimic those of a bee sting--swollen and painful.
